WHAT IS COLLAGEN?
After water, Collagen is the most abundant protein in your body and makes up several body parts, including tendons, ligaments, skin and muscles. It makes up 80% of your skin's structure which maintains skin elasticity and helps to strengthen the skin and provide hydration. As you age, your body produces less collagen, leading to joint pain and stiffness, hair loss or thinning, skin ageing and wrinkles and a decrease in the elasticity of ligaments and tendons. Other well-known benefits include stronger hair and nails, gut health, brain health, joint support and some research even mentions weight loss.
Types of Collagen
There are five types of collagen throughout the body and they all have different functions.
This is the most abundant Collagen in the body and accounts for 90% of your body’s collagen. It helps in improving skin quality and supports skin elasticity.
This type of Collagen is found in your hair, skin, nails, eyes, ligaments and tendons, organs, blood vessels and bones.
This Collagen type promotes joint health and helps support digestive and immune function. If you don’t care so much about skincare or cellulite, this is a different collagen to try out.
This collagen type is found mostly in cartilages, joints and gut lining.
This Collagen type contributes to structure of muscles, as well as organs and blood vessels. It also contributes to skin tissue elasticity hence the reason it is most often used in combination with Type 1 to improve skin elasticity and hydration.
This collagen protein peptide type also aids in Muscle growth.
Type V collagen contributes to the formation of bone, cornea of the eye, muscle fibres, liver, lungs and the placenta. It supports wound healing, the forming of an embryo, and supports vision and overall eye health.
This collagen plays a crucial role in bone formation and supports healthy joint cartilage.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOUR COLLAGEN LEVELS DECLINE?
Unfortunately we cannot measure collagen loss by blood test, but you can tell when your body doesn’t have enough.
As you age, your body naturally makes less collagen, and this can start in your mid-to-late 20s. That causes various conditions that we usually accept as part of getting older:
- Skin loses elasticity and loss of natural fullness. Wrinkles start to appear, and your skin starts to sag
- Your wounds heal more slowly
- Hair looks lifeless
- Tendons and ligaments feel stiffer and less flexible
- Muscle mass decreases
- Cartilage wears down which can cause joint pain or osteoarthritis
- Intestinal lining gets thinner
- Blood vessel walls become weaker
- Your teeth and bone becomes weaker
